NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -The New York City Council on Wednesday approved a proposal from the city's health care system to remove a number of prescription drugs from the city's pharmacy.
The council's recommendation came after the council unanimously passed its own pharmacy-safety bill that is expected to be passed in January.
"I'm not sure the health care system is as safe as we've ever been," said Michael Ritroff, the Council's deputy chairman.
The drug price would have remained as low as $2 per pill and $30 per prescription, but the council decided not to recommend it because it had been approved as an essential treatment for impotence.
The drug is called flibanserin, and it is used to treat hypertension. It has also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat male sexual problems.
The council's approval follows a similar vote on a similar bill in California in 2013, which the council rejected. The city's plan calls for a list of prescriptions approved by a health care professional to be removed from pharmacy shelves.
The council also unanimously approved a new drug application to the Food and Drug Administration, which the city plans to launch in late 2018.
Ritroff said his proposal comes after an analysis of more than 200 pharmaceutical studies and clinical trials conducted in the United States. He also said he's concerned the results could be used to recommend a drug that should be eliminated from the pharmacy market.
"I am concerned that if a drug is taken that was approved as an essential drug for a specific condition, that could be removed from the pharmacy market," Ritroff said. "This is a highly dangerous practice that could harm the general public."
The council is currently debating a similar bill on the state level.
The city is considering whether to submit a bill for a similar drug application, but Ritroff said he's not comfortable with the proposal.
"I don't see any harm in the drug companies," Ritroff said. "They have a lot of money to spend and they have to do it in the future."
But he noted the council was not going to approve a drug that would be removed from the pharmacy shelves. Ritroff said he's not sure whether the drug would be used in treating impotence. He's also concerned that the drug's safety could be severely affected by a sudden drop in the price of the drug and its effectiveness.
The council unanimously agreed to recommend that all pharmacies have the same drug information for patients, including the prescription information, as it does for patients using prescription medications. In addition, the drug information should be used as part of the health care system's comprehensive plan.
The pharmacy-safety bill is one of the city's many pieces of legislation. It requires that pharmacies be fully compliant with the federal Food and Drug Administration's recommendations for how drugs should be used and dispensed.
Ritroff said he has not heard a single pharmacy-safety complaint against the pharmacy department that could be filed. He said he has heard of complaints from patients with health problems or the public that they are being treated inappropriately.
"This bill is one of the best pieces of legislation that the city has made in its history," Ritroff said.
The drug is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat erectile dysfunction, and it has been approved by the Health Care Regulatory Agency in the United States for treating impotence.
Ritroff said he has not heard any complaints against the drug that could be filed. But he said his concern is that the company's compliance with the rules may not be as strict as it used to be.
"I don't think there's a lot of pressure in the public's part of the country," Ritroff said. "So, what happens is this drug has a higher price, and we can say that it's a cost that is higher than the price of Viagra."
The pharmacy-safety bill was voted to approve by the council's vote. The pharmacy-safety bill is still in its final stages, but Ritroff said he's looking forward to discussing it with his new employer.
The new drug application is expected to be submitted before January, and the company plans to launch the drug in the United States in the second half of 2017.Kamagra Oral Jelly is a medication sold toand boost sexual performance.
